The Problem with Traditional DevOps
DevOps promised to break down silos between development and operations. And it delivered — but it also created a new problem. As organizations scaled, every team started building their own deployment pipelines, their own monitoring dashboards, and their own infrastructure scripts. The result? Enter Platform Engineering
Platform engineering flips the script. Instead of expecting every developer to be an infrastructure expert, you build an Internal Developer Platform (IDP) — a self-service layer that abstracts away the complexity of infrastructure while still giving teams the flexibility they need.
Think of it as building a product for your developers. The platform team creates golden paths — opinionated, well-tested workflows that cover 80% of use cases. Need to deploy a new microservice? Run a single command. Need a database? Request it through a portal. Need observability? It’s baked in by default.
The Core Principles
1. Self-Service by Default
Developers shouldn’t need to file a ticket and wait three days to get a staging environment. A good platform lets them provision what they need, when they need it, with guardrails that prevent misconfigurations.
2. Golden Paths, Not Golden Cages
The platform should make the right thing easy, not make the wrong thing impossible. Teams with specialized needs should still be able to customize their setup — they just won’t need to for most tasks.
3. Treat Your Platform as a Product
This means user research, feedback loops, documentation, versioning, and iterating based on what your developers actually need. If your platform team isn’t talking to their users regularly, something is wrong.
What a Modern IDP Looks Like
Most mature platforms I’ve worked with share a common architecture:
- A developer portal (like Backstage) for service catalogs and documentation
- Standardized templates for creating new services, pipelines, and infrastructure
- GitOps-driven deployments with ArgoCD or Flux handling the reconciliation loop
- Automated environment provisioning using Terraform or Crossplane
- Built-in observability with Prometheus, Grafana, and distributed tracing

Getting Started
You don’t need to build everything at once. Start by identifying the biggest pain point your developers face today. Is it slow environment provisioning? Inconsistent CI/CD pipelines? Lack of observability? Pick one problem, solve it well, and expand from there.
The shift from DevOps to platform engineering isn’t about replacing what works. It’s about packaging your best practices into a product that scales with your organization. The teams that get this right ship faster, onboard new developers quicker, and spend far less time firefighting infrastructure issues.
